Heartworm Prevention Schedule
Providing your new puppy protection against heartworm disease is imperative. Heartworms are endemic in our area, and between 2004 and 2022 our practice has diagnosed over 675 cases of this preventable silent killer. The dewormer we provide your puppy will kill the typical puppy parasites, Roundworms and Hookworms, as well as provide initial protection against Heartworms.
At the time of their last puppy visit you will need to start monthly oral parasite preventives. When your puppy is 6 months or older they can get the ProHeart 6 injection, and at a year of age they can get the Pro Heart 12. ProHeart provides either 6 or 12 months of protection depending on the product you select.
We recommend at your puppy's last puppy visit you purchase 3 months or oral preventive, then return when they are are 6 months for the ProHeart 6 injection, and then at their first yearly visit they start getting either the ProHeart 6 or 12. Our recommendations will vary depending on your pets age at the time of the last puppy visit.
Cost will vary depending on what your puppy needs to stay protected, we will be glad to discuss those fees at the time of the visit.
