Canine Allergies

The Future of Canine Atopy Treatment Is Here

The most common causes of itching in a dog or cat are skin infections (Pyoderma), and ALLERGIES. Pets can develop allergies to fleas, food proteins, or numerous types of airborne allergens, known as atopy.

Allergies are an abnormal response of the bodies’ immune system to proteins that otherwise should not induce a reaction.  In people, allergies usually cause respiratory problems such as breathing problems, runny nose, and irritation to the eyes.  In our pets, allergies cause different signs.  The signs of pet allergies include:  ITCHING, Licking at Paws, Chewing, Chronic Diarrhea, Pawing at Face, and Recurrent Ear Infections.

The severe itching of an allergic cat or dog often stimulates a pet to lick, chew, and scratch; which can lead to trauma to the skin.  The damage to the skin can be so severe that the skin becomes infected, and/or thickened which causes the skin to become more irritated and even more itchy.  This, in turn, results in more aggressive itching, and the development of a vicious cycle of itching followed by damage to the skin, followed by skin infections.

Treatment of allergies can be frustrating task for the pet, owner, and the veterinarian. For decades the treatment options were limited to steroids, which have numerous unpleasant side effects, specially when used daily for control of allergy symptoms. Over the years new treatment options have evolved, all with their own benefits, risk, cost, and side effects to consider.  Now the future is here!

Our office now has the newest treatment option available for Canine Atopy.  The caninized anti-cIL-31 monoclonal antibody (mAb) is an injection that, in simple terms, turns off the itch signal.  For more information click the banner below, and then call us for and examination and discussion if this is and option for your allergic dog. This injection only treats Atopy, (seasonal allergies), but we do find most allergic pets have some degree of Food, Flea and Atopic disease, so many allergic pets may benefit with the use of this therapy even if they suffer other types of pet allergies.  The anti-cIL-31 monoclonal antibody injection in combination with diet change, and flea control can tremendously improve the quality of life of countless dogs that suffer from allergic dermatitis.

Premier VetCare is one of select few hospital invited to offer this therapeutic option under its conditional licence. The Injection was made available to dermatologist specialist in the fall of 2015, and now is available to select animal care facilities.
